Despite the war: success stories in overcoming tuberculosis
Valentyna Vasylivna (name changed), a resident of a village in the Chernihiv region, lived modestly with her partner before the war. Prolonged stress and shelling undermined her immune system, and she began to notice the first symptoms: prolonged cough, weakness, and weight loss.
Thanks to the care of her neighbors, who helped her get to Chernihiv for examination, she was diagnosed with severe TB. The woman needed long-term inpatient treatment.
During the most difficult period, support was provided by the Chernihiv Network Charitable Organization. A social worker accompanied the woman throughout her treatment, helped her with the necessary paperwork, and coordinated her interactions with medical institutions.
Due to her hospitalization, Valentyna Vasylivna was unable to prepare for winter: her farm was left unattended. The social worker turned to the neighbors, who got together and helped the woman with clothes, shoes, and food. The organization also provided monthly food vouchers worth 400 hryvnias.
“The war has brought many challenges, but even in such conditions, successful cases of overcoming TB demonstrate the importance of a comprehensive approach and the support of NGOs,” say experts from the charitable organization “100% Life. Chernihiv.”
Tuberculosis in times of war
Tuberculosis remains a serious threat. However, timely detection, adherence to treatment regimens, and community support enable people to successfully overcome the disease. Charitable organizations play a key role in ensuring continuous treatment and social support even in the most difficult circumstances.
